Toffee Vodka

Toffee Vodka is a smooth, rich, creamy, toffee flavoured vodka and the perfect winter apéritif or digestif. I’ve heard it described as the ‘mountains best kept secret’, as it is massively popular après ski drink. However, I think the secret is well and truly out now! This recipe is extremely quick and easy, uses only 3 ingredients and is a fabulous way to bring that alpine atmosphere into your home at Christmas.

Course aperitif, digestif
Keyword toffee, vodka, Werther's Originals
Prep Time 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 litre of vodka
  • 200g Werther’s Originals (do not use the sugar-free variety)
  • 4 tablespoons dark brown sugar

Instructions

First you must sterilise the bottles –

  1. Wash the bottles and lids in hot water and place them on a baking tray in a cold oven.

  2. Turn the oven on to Fan Oven 140°C/160°C/325°F/Gas 3.

  3. As soon as the oven reaches the required temperature, set a timer for 20 minutes.

  4. At 20 minutes, turn the oven off and leave the jars in the oven to cool.

Make the toffee vodka -

  1. Collect together your equipment (see Recipe Notes below) and ingredients.

  2. Unwrap the Werther’s Originals and put in a large glass jar with the dark brown sugar.

  3. Add the vodka, seal with a lid and shake well.

  4. Set aside in a cool dark place for 24 hours and try and remember to shake it well a few times, until the toffees and sugar have dissolved into the vodka.

  5. The vodka will separate a little as it stands. Shake well and decant into sterilised bottles.

  6. The vodka will separate again as it stands. Make sure you shake well before you serve.

  7. Store at room temperature, in the fridge or, my favourite, in the freezer. It will not freeze but is delicious served wonderfully cold. Delicious served straight or over ice.

Recipe Notes

Equipment:

  • large glass jar and lid
  • tablespoon measurement
  • sterilised bottles

If your bottle of vodka is 700ml:

  • 700ml vodka
  • 135g Werther’s Originals (do not use the sugar-free variety)
  • 3 tablespoons dark brown sugar

Great to use in cocktails:

You can also use it to make a number of cocktails. Try:

  • mix with Kahlua and a splash of cream – a White Toffee Russian
  • pour a measure in a champagne glass and top with Prosecco or champagne
  • add a measure of rum or whisky
  • use to make a Dark and Stormy with rum, ginger beer and lime juice
  • or my personal favourite – use it in a Salted Toffee Espresso Martini. Vigorously shake 45ml Toffee Vodka with 25ml espresso coffee, 20 ml Kahlua and a small pinch of salt in a cocktail shaker

Try this quick dessert:

I also love it as a very quick dessert with Vanilla Ice cream, espresso coffee and a splash of toffee vodka – basically an Affogato with Toffee Vodka.
