Use the correct blender:

This is very important. Your blender or food processor needs to be able to crush ice. If you are unsure, please do not attempt to make it. However, scroll down and see how you can make a healthy milkshake in a jam jar.

Jam Jar Banana Milkshake
What are the best bananas to use?

Older bananas, those with lots of brown spots on the skin, are by far the best bananas to use for milkshakes. They are sweeter and softer than those you would probably select for eating. There is no added sugar in this recipe, so the sweeter the banana the better. The softer flesh also ensures that this milkshake is smooth and creamy.

Can you make a vegan shake?

Yes you can. Simply use your favourite milk. You can use dairy, oat, nut or coconut milk int his recipe.

How to make this delicious and very healthy milkshake:

  1. One hour before you want to drink the milkshake, thickly slice the banana and pop it in the freezer for 1 hour. I place the banana on baking parchment for ease of removal.
  2. After one hour, tip the frozen banana, ice, milk and a pinch of cinnamon powder in a strong blender or food processor and blitz until smooth and frothy.
  3. Pour into glasses, add a little pinch of cinnamon and enjoy immediately.

How to make a Healthy Banana Milkshake in a Jam Jar

You can use any type of milk in this shake; I made this version using tinned coconut milk, straight from the fridge. When it is very cold, the milk thickens and makes this milkshake feel very luxurious. Try and buy the best quality coconut milk you can find. The ones in Asian stores tend to be far superior than those in supermarkets and can also be cheaper.

Please see the printable Recipe Card below for the exact, yet condensed, quantities and instructions.

The only ingredients you need are:

  • ripe banana – ideally with lots of black spots on the skin.
  • milk of your choice – it can be dairy, oat, coconut, nut milk. I made this drink with tinned coconut milk. Make sure your milk is very cold, straight from the fridge.
  • cinnamon powder
  • large jam jar

How to make this delicious drink:

  1. Mash, mash, mash the banana. The more you mash the creamier it will be and the nicer the milkshake.
  2. Tip it into a jam jar and add your milk of choice. Make sure you have a couple of centimetres free of milkshake before you add a lid. This will enable you to shake it properly.
  3. Screw on the lid and shake, shake and shake again!
  4. Remove the lid, sprinkle with a little cinnamon and enjoy straight away.
