Hot Orange Chocolate

Jump to Recipe

It is Chocolate Orange Season! Chocolate orange is everywhere and in everything! Although there are lots of orange flavoured chocolates out there, the most common one seems to be Terry’s Chocolate Oranges. Rather fortuitously, they are on sale at the moment and can be bought in many different places for just £1. So it seemed a great opportunity to perfect Hot Orange Chocolate .

Lots of coffee shops are selling Hot Orange Chocolate drinks and Charlotte was disappointed recently when she and her boyfriend bought one each and they could barely taste the orange. Charlotte challenged me to come up with the perfect drink – she was of course, the chief taster! A few hot chocolate drinks later, I think we have found the perfect balance of orange, chocolate and sweetness.

The first few were either too sweet or too rich and one batch far too chocolately. Indeed, when we gave this final version to Mr Daffodil – also known as ‘he who doesn’t like sweet things’ – to try a sip, he drank the whole lot and decreed that it was outstanding!

This one is still sweet and also rich but not to the same extreme and is balanced with plenty of orange flavour, some dark 70% cocoa chocolate and a touch of salt. You cannot taste the salt, it just enhances all the flavours already there.

How to make Hot Orange Chocolate

Collect all your ingredients together:

  • orange zest
  • Terrys’ milk chocolate orange
  • dark chocolate (70% cocoa)
  • milk – I used semi skimmed
  • pinch of salt
  • double or whipping cream whipped to soft peaks – optional

Please note: we have only tested this recipe with Terry’s Milk Chocolate Orange and not other orange chocolates or indeed not with the dark or white version of Terry’s.

Whip up that drink:

  1. Break up the chocolate and blitz in a food processor to make fine crumbs. Alternatively, grate the chocolate by hand.
  2. If you are using a milk frother, pour half into the frother now – if you do not have a frother, ignore this and add all the milk to the orange zest.
  3. Pour the remaining milk into a saucepan and add the orange zest.
  4. Stir to mix and heat on low to allow the oils from the orange zest to infuse the milk.
  5. After a couple of minutes, strain the milk and orange through a fine sieve.
  6. Use a spoon to extract as much flavour from the orange zest as possible.
  7. Quickly wash out your saucepan – this will remove any extraneous bits and prevent it from burning when you re-heat the milk.
  8. Pour the orange flavoured milk back into the clean saucepan and add the chocolate.
  9. When you are ready for your hot chocolate, heat the milk and chocolate and also turn on your milk frother, if using.
  10. When the chocolate has melted and hot and the remaining milk is frothy, combine the two and then pour into a mug.

Your Hot Chocolate Orange is now ready to drink but if you want a real treat, add some cream whipped cream and decorate with some orange zest and grated chocolate.
